Mary Lou Wertz
Broker - Founder
A pro with 25 years of experience spearheading real estate ventures both domestically and internationally, Mary Lou has successfully created a career out of combining her passions for people, homes and history. Life experiences had her primed for success. In Connecticut and later in London, she bought, renovated, and sold houses; two favorite projects are a c.1850 London townhouse and a c.1800 Charleston single on King St. Her project on King St got her quickly involved in learning to navigate the City’s codes and various associations.
During the decade as a resident in London, Mary Lou solidified her love for architectural beauty, history, fine food and culture, all of which translated perfectly to Charleston.
Mary Lou’s ascent to becoming one of Charleston’s award winning, top producers was swift. She knows it all comes down to one thing: taking the time to understand her clients’ needs then using her industry knowledge, patience, and negotiating skills to convert those needs and hopes into reality. Her communication and listening skills are 2nd to none and you don’t want to test her memory. She is a true problem solver. Mary Lou’s background in accounting and executive search gives her a unique combination of understanding numbers and people.
Known as the go to pro in town for recommendations for the latest restaurants and trends. You can find her out and about most nights taking advantage of all Charleston has to offer.
A native New Yorker and graduate of Villanova University, she worked in corporate accounting for leading firms like Deloitte Haskins and Sells, Salomon Brothers, and as an executive recruiter for Teeman Kiniry, before pausing to raise her three children.
Mary Lou and her husband David love being active in the community and support Historic Charleston Foundation, the Preservation Society of Charleston, the Library Society and The Gibbes Museum, among other organizations. She is a founding board member of Good Friends of the Lowcountry and a supporter of MUSC – CDAP (Center for Drug + Alcohol Program).
When not closing real estate deals, Mary Lou can be found on the golf course, the beach or enjoying time with friends.
